Throughout life’s personal and professional challenges, Bal has always seen the glass as half full—”that with focus and determination, we can do anything we imagine! Although we all encounter obstacles in life, sometimes truly formidable ones, what motivates me is seeing how people conquer those challenges to find sources of fulfillment and joy.”
Bal, too, has encountered significant challenges in his life. They began with my rigorous education at IIT Mumbai. It was there, in India, that he met my wife. Together we decided to tackle an even bigger challenge: to leave our families and country to come to the USA, the land of opportunity. Bal got into MIT, and his hard work paid off. He graduated and got a great job with Praxair/Linde and grew to be an officer of the company. He and his wife had a son, Neel, bought a house, and enjoyed 10 years of steady career and personal growth.
Sadly, those good times were not to last. In 1993, Bal’s wife passed away. His first thoughts were for his son, then 13, and himself. Being a single parent was not easy; it sometimes overwhelmed him. He learned that kids are happiest when they know their boundaries, since it gives them a sense of security. Setting limits was hard since his son had lost his mom. Supporting and celebrating with his son was easier. Bal learned that when life throws you a curveball there is no magical solution. The lesson he took away is that “we should always be prepared for change, whether it comes from outside or within”.
It was a philosophy that would serve him well because Neel developed mental illness in 1999 while at college at USC. Yes, life threw him a second curve ball. Bal brought his son back home to New York and worked with him for seven years to help him manage his illness. Initially it was like trying to push a boulder, but one that eventually started rolling. It was so fulfilling to see Neel become healthy again.
Having helped his son become independent, it was time to bring solutions to society about care. His personal trials and tribulations in finding good care for his wife and son had brought him to this destination. He founded LifeWorx and used his engineering, science, psychology, and experience to build LifeWorx as a fortress of trust, skill, and reliable care. LifeWorx’ clients have helped us attain the highest customer satisfaction rating in the care and lifestyle industry and grow into a leading service provider in greater New York and Florida.
Bal is spiritual at heart, a yoga devotee, loves to solve problems for our community and nurtures the people around him. Bal volunteered for Junior Achievement and was a board member for Westchester United Way and Open Door (formerly Ossining Open Door). He serves on the Board of Overseers at Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, ADDF, a Venture philanthropy.
